The 24th of September is Heritage Day and the Centre for Creative Arts (University of KwaZulu-Natal) and Poetry Africa, will take this opportunity to focus on creating awareness on our Environmental Heritage. The picnic event will take place under the blue skies, at Durban’s Green Hub, an environmental sanctuary nestled among trees near the mouth of the Umngeni River which leads into the Indian ocean. The public which will assemble on this day will take part, in a river-bank clean up of the surrounding area, a poetry weaving session where everybody will be able to take part by writing on a sheet of cloth a few lines of poetry focusing on the subject of the environment, musical items, an opportunity to perform their own poetry in the open mic section lead by the city’s prominent poets namely, Mama Gcina Mhlophe, Sakhile Shabalala and Busiswa Gqulu and close this all off with a public screening of an environmental film.

All the poets of Durban young and old are invited to this event as we intend on reaching as huge a group of locals as possible in a collaborative effort to unite in raising environmental awareness.
