100 Thousand Poets for Change is a global poetry event happening on September 24 with the goal of fostering solidarity among poets of the world and using our collective art to demonstrate against and to promote change in our local communities.
I will read Allen Ginsberg’s poems “Howl” and “America” as my way of protesting against the policies of Governor Rick Perry, particularly those that hurt education and help to promote the continued subjugation of women in Texas.
In addition, anyone else who would like to read as a form of protest is more than welcome. You can read from your own work, or the work of someone else.

Celebrate the launch of new poetry collections by Ed Bok Lee and Bao Phi, two of the Twin Cities’ most dynamic poets on the national Asian American literary and spoken word scene. In “Whorled,” Ed Bok Lee looks toward a global future, one where the dividing lines between state, religion, race, history, and culture have been blurred to the extent that the very idea of difference requires a new understanding. In Bao Phi’s “Sông I Sing,” the Twin Cities provides the backdrop to a rhythmic exploration of the contradictions of race and class in America. Emceed by multidisciplinary artist and spoken word performer Shá Cage, the program will feature a performance and conversation by the poets and music by DJ Nak.

Want to be part of a historic, global poetry event?
To date, 650 events in 450 cities and 95 countries will take place on September 24 to promote environmental, social, and political change through poetry. Poets, writers, artists will create, perform and demonstrate in their communities with a focus on peace and environmental sustainability. Poet and founder Michael Rothenberg started 100 Thousand Poets for Change to direct attention to dialog and away from violence.
Join me. I ’m asking that Richmond poets and readers of poetry — teachers, students, and all poetic word lovers — find a poem or create one of their own. Choose a poem that celebrates positive living and a sustainable vision for the future. Meet at Cafe Ole in Carytown and chalk your poem in the parking lot or along the sidewalk. Get a friend or stranger to join in. Start a conversation. Share your love for poetic expression and your hopes for the planet.
If you can’t make it to Cafe Ole, write the poem on a wall, playground, or any other welcome public space. Take a picture and include it in the official website. (Scroll down on the right to find Richmond VA.)

Guerilla Haiku Movement: Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Guerilla Haiku Movement is on a mission to cover Minneapolis in poetry, as part of 100000 Poets for Change, and you’re invited. If you’ve got the verse, we’ll have the chalk. Once equipped, you can scribble sidewalk rhymes at your leisure or set off on an optional scavenger hunt to help find new canvases and bring passers-by in on the fun. Organizer Caley Vickerman started by asking people to write haikus to one another, first in theater exercises, then on the streets of New York City. The movement has since blossomed into a seven-city fall tour, with hundreds of on-the-street poets ready to pounce — and Minneapolis is the sixth stop. Haiku of all themes and lettering of all forms are welcome, so seek out your spot and let those syllables fly. (Philadelphia City Paper)

Larry Weiss-Nashville, TN
Over the past four decades, Larry Weiss has achieved creative heights some would envy. He is a multi-awarded songwriter for his iconic Rhinestone Cowboy. His songs span the creative from the late Nat Cole to the incomparable Jeff beck, from Eric Burdon and the Animals to Dolly Parton, from Wilson Pickett to Neil Diamond to Radiohead.
His number one worldwide hit, Bend Me Shape Me, has been used as a product endorsement for numerous major brands. Jeff Beck’s Hi Ho Silver Lining is the biggest soccer anthem in the U.K., and performed by England’s who’s who of the Rock world. Many of his songs have also appeared in T.V. or film projects all over the world.
Inspired by his song, Weiss was the driving force behind getting the film Rhinestone made, Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton its stars.
A Broadway Musical, Rhinestone Cowboy, libretto and song score by Weiss, recently developed for the stage, is slated for 2012. The Dallas Cowboys will be using his song as their charge theme for the 2011 season.
In the very near future, Las Vegas may very well see a casino/resort hotel honoring the Country Music field, and in Nashville a boutique hotel, both using the Rhinestone Cowboy brand.
Larry, expanding his story telling for feature film, and leaning towards inspirational and family values, has written an adventure/fantasy story for feature film called The Last Magician.
He has also acquired the rights to the amazing life story of Maximilian Sikinger, the man who helped start the nature boy movement in California in the 1940’s, and whose persona inspired the song Nature Boy launching the singing career of Nat Cole.

In his spare time, Weiss, an abstract painter, is a singer/songwriter who performs mostly for charity in various venues domestically and abroad. His original version of Rhinestone Cowboy attracted Glen Campbell to record the song when he first heard it on the radio. Larry’s latest CD release, Cuts and Scratches is on the Cape Records International label.
Larry Weiss, born in New Jersey, who began his writing career in the 1960’s on the streets of New York, has also lived in Los Angeles. He has two daughters and a son all involved in the entertainment field. Nashville Tennessee has been his home over the past twenty years.
