Poets around the world are currently organizing and planning nearly 400 individual events to take place simultaneously on September 24th in a demonstration/celebration of poetry and the spoken word to promote social and political change.

Event participation displays rapid growth since it officially began on April 4, 2011. So far 340 cities representing 70 countries are participating in a unified effort to host a one day global event on September 24th, with an overall focus on peace and sustainability, which is, as founderMichael Rothenberg states, “… a major concern worldwide and the guiding principle for this event.”

Poets, writers, artists, and humanitarians will create, perform, educate and demonstrate, in their individual communities, and decide their own specific area of focus for change. Bob Holman and Margery Snyder,
in a recent article on About.com say that “the beauty of the concept of 100 Thousand Poets for Change is that it is completely decentralized and completely inclusive.”

A poetry and peace gathering in strife-torn Jalalabad, Afghanistan and poets in Nogales, Mexico and Nogales, Arizona reading poems to each other across the border fence are just two of the hundreds of events that will take place around the world. All organizers and their groups have an individual Event Location Blog page on the main weblog to post written material, photos, and video to document their event, their political and social concerns, and their community participation.

Immediately following September 24th all documentation on the 100TPC.org weblog will be preserved by Stanford University in California, which has recognized 100 Thousand Poets for Change as an historical event, the largest poetry reading in history. They will archive the complete contents of the weblog, 100TPC.org, as part of their digital archiving program LOCKSS.
